SiRFprima Platform to Make GPS Compatibility Better
According to Engadget, the SiRFprima platform will dethrone the SiRF III chip as the GPS leader.
The newly announced platform will be able to simultaneously receive GPS and Galileo signals, support 3D acceleration for new, enhanced maps that are or will soon be available, and will work easier with external devices like touchscreens and car players.
Current GPS receivers receive GPS signals from satellites that were originally deployed for US military use. Recently, the European Union became concerned that the US may switch off satellites for navigation or if there was an interruption in service from US satellites, drivers wouldn’t be able to navigate. The EU proposed the Galileo system for navigation. Unlike the US GPS system, Galileo would be entirely for civilian use. For a full explanation, you can visit this Wikipedia article. The new SiRFprima platform will be able to detect both, GPS signals and Galileo signals. Hopefully, accuracy will be greatly improved once Galileo launches.
