Slashdot reports that Senator Rick Santorum has successfully been lobbied to sponsor a bill that would no longer allow the national weather service (NOAA) from providing free weather information, which it currently provides, over the Internet, in XML format. The source of the lobbying was Accuweather, which charges for its weather information. Accuweather argues that the NOAA providing free information as the government competing with a private business. (How this is different from the US Postal Service competition with UPS/FedEx/etc. remains to be seen.)

If the bill actually passes, it could affect a number of Pocket PC applications which use the NOAA-provided data to display weather information on the Today screen.
