Many of us were disappointed when we realized that the USB port in our Pocket PCs was a client only. It wasn’t set up to control another USB device, only to sync. The faster syncing was nice but we longed for being able to connect and control devices from our Pocket PC.

NEC recently announced that if will manufacture low-power chip sets that will allow PDAs to control IEEE 1394, or FireWire devices from either two or three FireWire ports. Samples of these chip sets will be shipping in August.

A FireWire enabled PDA could download stills from your digital camera, download action from your video recorder or sync with your PC. With the 400MB/s speed of FireWire, you could even watch full motion video streamed from your DVD player.
